Top 10 Vegetables to Grow in April

Summer is most definitely on its way, and despite the colder nights, most of the country is enjoying bright sunshine and promises of warmer days to come. With the brightening weather and the gloomy economy, now is a great time to invest in growing some of your own produce. Here’s what to grow in April.

Carrots

April is an ideal time to sow maincrop carrot varieties like ‘Autumn King’ or ‘Chantenay’. Sow directly into well-drained, sandy soil and enjoy them in summer.

Lettuce and Salad Leaves

With milder temperatures, lettuce varieties such as ‘Little Gem’ and ‘Lollo Rosso’ can be sown outdoors. Other salad greens like rocket and mustard greens will also thrive. These tend to grow quite quickly so you’ll be enjoying them in a matter of weeks.

Beetroot

Sow beetroot seeds directly into the soil in April for a steady summer supply. Choose bolt-resistant varieties like ‘Boltardy’ for delicious results.

Peas

April is a perfect time to sow both early and maincrop pea varieties. Provide support with netting or canes to encourage healthy growth, and enjoy throughout the summer.

Onions and shallots

If you haven’t got around to planting onion sets and shallots, April is your last chance to do so for a summer harvest. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot.

Potatoes

Early and maincrop potatoes can be planted in April. Plant them in deep, well-prepared trenches with plenty of organic matter; potato bags are useful if you haven’t got a lot of space.

Brassicas (Cabbage, Kale, and Sprouts)

Hardy brassicas such as summer cabbages, kale, and Brussels sprouts can be sown in April for transplanting later. They benefit from well-firmed soil and protection from pests.

Leeks

Leeks can still be sown in April for harvesting in autumn and winter. Start them in seed trays or directly in the ground, giving them plenty of space for strong growth.

Radishes

Radishes grow quickly and can be sown throughout April for a continuous harvest. They are perfect for filling gaps in the garden and are satisfying to grow thanks to rapid results!

French and runner beans

Beans can be sown indoors or in a greenhouse in April, ready for planting out once the risk of frost has passed. They thrive in rich, well-drained soil with sturdy support.

Tips for successful vegetable planting

If you’re an inexperienced gardener, there are some things you can do to protect your plants when they’re at their most vulnerable. Protect young plants from late frosts; keep an eye on the weather forecast and if cold nights are predicted, protect them with fleece or cloches. Give your plants the best chance of survival by working in compost or well-rotted manure to boost soil fertility. Water regularly, especially as it gets warmer.
